Accidental Keto Diet

Over the past few months, my husband and I have been slowly trying to be healthier. Not necessarily to lose weight, but we're not going to complain if it happens.

I've spent most of the past 7 years counting macros and trying to fit foods I like into my macros. It's worked for the most part, but now that we're getting older, we want to focus more on health than eating all the crap we want.

In the past month we've made some smaller changes, like spending less time in the drive thru and switching to tea from diet sodas. The cutting out fast food completely has been hard.. because tacos.. but it's something that we need to do if we want to be healthier.

Research Time...

Last week we decided that we were going to try a healthier diet. So I looked around and found a few that I thought would be a good fit for us. Some of my requirements were:
  • Cutting out processed foods
  • Focus on lean protein and vegetables
  • No limits on fruits
  • Preferably include dairy, but not required
  • Sustainable as a lifestyle
The diets that I came up with were:
  • Paleo
  • Primal
  • Keto
Now I know that a lot of people don't consider any of these sustainable, but they can be if you want them to be. You just have to work a little bit to make sure that you aren't putting yourself in situations where you are too tempted to go off of the diet. Or if you do go off, you must be able to realize that it's not the end of the diet, and get right back to it.

After looking in the diets and talking about them with my husband, he said "we know enough about diets and what we should do, why don't we make our own?"

That night went to work creating our meal plan for the week. We use MyFitnessPal to track our calories and macros, so when we were plugging everything in, we ended up with a really high fat diet (because we needed the calories) with lean proteins and leafy green vegetables and a few fruits.
After looking at what we had come up with, we realized that it was really close to a typical keto diet with 20% protein, 10% carbs and 70% fat. So we adjusted a few things and came up with a keto diet- mostly by accident.

Our meal plan for the first week looks like this:

Breakfast: eggs cooked in butter with bacon and an apple ( I subbed some avocado for the apple here)
Lunch: Chicken Salad with romaine and kale and olive oil and lemon juice dressing
Dinner: Philly in a Bowl: Ground beef with peppers and onions cooked in butter topped with a bit of cheese
